Irish Water investing €5m plant in Kinvara
Irish Water is investing €5million to construct a new wastewater treatment plant in Kinvara.
The new plant will be located at Ballybranagan and Irish Water says its design, now entering its final stages, will allow for future population growth and tourist numbers.
Over the next two weeks, Irish Water will host meetings with community groups to address local concerns over the 14 month project which is set to be completed in early 2017.
Information Officer with Irish Water, Sean Corrigan, says it’s fantastic news for Kinvara to get the project over the line after almost forty years.
It puts to bed decades of campaigning for a new plant to tackle raw sewerage in Kinvara Bay.
Environment Minister Alan Kelly spoke at the contact signing earlier today and said he looks forward to people swimming at Kinvara Bay once more.
Galway East TD Paul Connaughton welcomes the contract,“The signing of the contract for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Kinvara is an important day for the region and will end the discharging of raw sewage into Kinvara Bay.”
“The people of Kinvara and the many tourists who visit the region will greatly benefit from enhanced wastewater treatment facilities and news that a separate contract to upgrade the town’s sewer network will be signed in coming weeks is also most welcome.”
“Bathing in the area of Kinvara Bay will be made much safer by this work and will make the area more attractive to tourists,” said Deputy Connaughton, who also welcomed the fact that the design of the new wastewater plant will allow for future expansion of the town.
