The Government has announced a plan to end the use of prefabs in schools around Ireland by 2021.

Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan announced the  locations today as she unveiled the government’s six year plan that will see €2.8bn invested in school building projects all over Ireland.

The plan will also deliver an extra 19,000 primary school places and 43,000 at secondary level.

Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan said: “We’re committed to ending the use of pre-fabs in any kind of a long-term way.

There may always be a need for pre-fabs in the short term, but through this programme we will no longer have pre-fabs in schools for long-term use.

“I think that is a very positive development for our young children.”

Overall the six year programme will cover 324 projects – either new builds or major extensions to provide 19,000 new primary school places and 43,000 new post-primary places.

With the bulge in pupil numbers now moving into second-level, 10 of the new schools will be post-primary, which will open by 2017. They will be followed in 2018 with three new post-primary schools.
