Galway to get 50 jobs as medical devices company SMT sets up EU HQ
Sahajanand Medical Technologies (SMT) is to establish its European headquarters, including a state-of-the-art research, development and innovation centre, in Galway.
The investment by SMT will see 50 jobs created over the next five years.
The company develops and manufactures minimally invasive coronary stent systems in India and supplies these products across 60 countries in Europe, Asia, MENA and Latin America.
At the announcement, SMT’s Western European Head, Mr Gaurav Goel, said: “We were pioneers among Indian medical device companies to identify tremendous value in investing in research and development… With this centre, we hope to tap into the excellent talent pool available in Galway to make further enhancements in existing products and to develop new and innovative products.”
Also attending the announcement was Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources, Sean Kyne TD. He commented: “The decision by SMT to choose Galway as its European headquarters and create 50 jobs is a further vote of confidence in the City and County which has deservedly earned a reputation as a medical technologies hub. Companies such as SMT, which are pioneers in their fields, are attracted to Galway and the West for many reasons, not least the strong, vibrant and varied research being undertaken at our local higher education institutions.”
