Chinese ICT company Huawei is to open a new research and development office at the IFSC in Dublin, which is expected to hire up to 50 people by next year.

Huawei currently has 120 employees working in research and development in Ireland.

The move is part of the company’s investment in research and development in Ireland. Huawei has invested €35m in the sector in Ireland so far this year.

The company has 3 other research and development locations in Ireland located in Dublin, Cork and Athlone. The Chinese telecom company has been in Ireland since 2004 and works with all major telecom providers here.

The new office will expand and enhance research into business innovation, network services, cloud and customer experience, as well as ICT transformation dedicated to service provider operations. It will be the lead research and development office in Ireland, working in conjunction with Huawei’s other research and development locations in Ireland.

Huawei Ireland will expand its STEM and education initiatives through its flagship CSR programme, ‘Seeds for the future’, to further support the Dublin facility’s core focus of cloud innovation.

The President at Huawei’s European Research Institute Zhou Hong said that each year, the company invests at least 10% of its global revenue in R&D.

He added that “The opening of our newest Dublin facility highlights our long term dedication to investment and opportunities in Ireland’s technology sector. The facility will tap into Dublin’s growing clusters of cloud and technology businesses, nurturing future talent and providing additional new opportunities for highly-skilled professionals.”

The project is supported by the Department of Jobs through IDA Ireland.

IDA Ireland chief executive Martin Shanahan said that Huawei’s decision to expand its research and development activity in Ireland is a great endorsement of the country’s workforce.

Richard Bruton, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation said that creating “a world-class ecosystem” for scientific research is a key part of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs.

“Today’s announcement that Huawei, a truly global leader in this sector, is locating a major R&D office in Dublin and creating 50 high-end jobs is a great boost”.

Huawei opened it’s first research and development office in Ireland in 2011, and in 2012 the company established a customer experience centre in Cork. Huawei recently expanded its research and development investment in Ireland through the acquisition of Amartus in July 2015.
