Cullen to invest £15 million in Scottish manufacturing site
Glasgow-based Cullen, which is Europe’s only combined manufacturer of moulded fibre and corrugated packaging company, has announced a £15 million expansion plan for its manufacturing site. The new state-of-the-art development will dramatically increase moulded fibre manufacturing capacity by 45% supporting Cullens’s domestic and export growth strategy.
In a world dominated by noisy sustainability headlines, a quiet revolution has been happening in the moulded fibre industry, creating solutions that can replace millions of tonnes of plastic immediately. Cullen is part of the revolution – the company has been pushing the boundaries of innovation for over 100 years.
Since 2020 it has manufactured over 1 billion plastic free products for customers in 34 countries globally. Its clients include NHS, McDonald’s, ASDA and Greggs to name a few. Cullen is unique, in that it builds its own bespoke machines on site and utilises its own waste from its closed loop manufacturing process. Cullen operate from a 14 acre production site in Glasgow, employing over 230 people.
David MacDonald, owner of Cullen, said: “Over the last five years our company has exponentially grown because of our ability to design and reliably deliver sustainable solutions for our clients globally. We have the experience, capacity and the scale to replace plastics for a variety of sectors right now, not in the future, now. The extensive investment we are making in our facility will allow us to meet the increasing demand for alternatives to plastic packaging.”
The infrastructure advancement will also include an onsite Innovation Centre. David McDonald explained: “Innovation isn’t new for Cullen, evolving our offering is central to our success. Our Innovation Centre will be the Cullen hub for designingnew, innovative products to replace single-use plastics, creating solutions that meet client and consumer expectations on being more planet friendly. All of this will further strengthen our position as a leading moulded fibre and corrugate packing supplier.”
He concluded: “2022 is an exciting year for Cullen, our expansion plans are the foundation for growth, we also have some very exciting product launches in the near future, that will really accelerate change in the packaging world. We challenge the sector to bring us your plastic problem and we can support your transition to a sustainable alternative. Our research and development team and world class facilities mean we don’t believe plastic free is the future, it’s possible right now.”
