Emmi cheese has done incredibly well at the World Cheese Awards in Birmingham (UK) this year, winning a total of 15 medals, including three ‘Super Gold’ medals. Emmi’s range of cave-aged cheeses proved to be a particularly good hit too, winning five medals. Furthermore, Emmi was able once again to showcase its top-quality Gruyère range (four medals).

Emmi is the largest cheese trader in Switzerland. The range includes cheese that the company produces itself at various production facilities as well as cheese that it purchases (annually over 30,000 tonnes). This cheese normally comes from commercial cheese dairies and is then matured, refined and packaged by Emmi. Cheese varieties such as Gruyère or Emmentaler, for instance, are produced in the region from which they originate, where they are matured for a number of months. They are then matured by Emmi for several more months, after which they are portioned and packaged by Emmi’s packaging specialists in Kirchberg according to customer wishes.

Emmi speciality cheeses won 15 awards at the cheese industry’s largest international competition. Winning three ‘Super Gold’ medals was particularly pleasing. This honour was awarded to two cheeses that Emmi produces itself: Le Gruyère AOP from the Courgenay cheese dairy and «Max 365» from the Studer cheese dairy. Additional super-gold winner was «Winzer» from the Grundbach cheese dairy.

Othmar Dubach, head of the Cheese Division, comments: “International awards such as these are the best advertisement for Swiss cheese. We are always of course particularly pleased when cheese from our own production facilities are able to win over the judges.”

The World Cheese Awards have been held annually since 1988 and have been the largest international competition of this type since 2005.
